Mindfulness for NQTs: Gratitude

by Alison Laycock

Encourage students to look for the positives and things they are grateful for throughout the day that they may share at the end of the day. Once they start being grateful, they will notice more and more the positives throughout the day and also want to offer them to others.

We looked at this a little in the post Mindfulness for NQTS: Acknowledge all the small successes, positives & improvements however this is slightly different. Often we can focus on the negatives or our lack of things/ situations/ abilities, however once we start practising gratitude, we can turn this around. Who helps you? what parts of your day add joy to your life? what items do you have that help you?

Often we forget these aspects which help us get through our personal and professional lives. As teachers, we can’t possibly do our job without the help of the caretakers, cleaners, office staff and any other school staff around the school who do theirs. Do we show enough gratitude to them? Do we as teachers thank them and do the students?

Through modelling gratitude to students, you can teach them to use it more and you can integrate it into your classroom or lessons by encouraging students to express it to each other or to write down their gratitude lists or points. Once you see the benefits in your own life, you will no doubt want to share this with your students and want to see them reap the benefits of raising their vibrations.
